The Last Supper

Ok, so I thought I would blog about what all the days we are leading into mean, I remember learning all this at School, but felt it time for a refresher class…. as Easter as with everything seems to have been rather hijacked by Cadbury and co…
So Maundy Thursday, always falls between the 19th March and the 22nd April, it is the day we commemorate the Last Supper attended by Jesus and his Apostles. It is the first day of the Easter celebrations, they shared bread and wine, therefore we continue to do so to this day. It was also the day that Jesus was betrayed by Judas..

The name ‘Maundy’ is derived from the Latin word “mandatum”, meaning a commandment. Jesus Christ, at the Last Supper, commanded:

‘And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.’ John 13:34

In England up until 1689 it was customary for the Monarch to wash the feet of the poor this would take place in Westminster Abbey. Today the Queen gives out Maundy money to pensioners.

So there you go, i know more than I did!

Happy Easter everyone!
