So my birthday treat was to see one of my all time fav singers the wonderful k d lang at the Royal Festival Hall, a venue that I normally associate with Brian Wilson, I decided to take the afternoon off and take a trip up to town earlier and see if i could spent some of my birthday money, it was a glorious day, so I ambled up to Gordon Hill Station and hopped on a train that took me to Covent Garden, after a bit of shopping I decided I had plenty of time to walk from Trafalgar Square to The Royal Festival Hall, I really had no idea where I was going, but contrary to what usually happens, I followed my nose and managed to find my way to Embankment, I had my iPod on and decided the Beach Boys ‘Sunflower’ album was an appropriate choice, Dennis sang ‘lots of people with no place to go’ which was very appropriate as i seemed to be looking at those very same people!
I was soon crossing the Millennium Bridge which gives you such a wonderful view of the Wheel and Big Ben (see attached piccie) I took a moment and just lent over the railing and took in the beautiful vista that was before me! I had some time to kill before I was to meet Liz so wandered along the Festival Pier area which now looks like the seaside with Beach Huts and sand! Great idea!
Then fast forward to the concert, Liz had never see k d lang before, I have had the pleasure a few times now so knew she was in for a treat! She kicked off the concert with ‘I Confess’ the opening number from her brilliant new cd ‘Sing it loud’ we were then treated to songs both old and new, the songs from the album sounded wonderfully fresh and vibrant, even better than they do on the album, she did an old favourite of mine the Chris Isaak song ‘Western Stars’ from the ‘Shadowland’ album, The place erupted when she sang ‘Hallelujah’, she literally got a standing ovation in the middle of the concert!
We had a lovely lady sitting next to us who had come over from Finland especially to see the show! Once it was over we were walking home and saw a group gathered by the stage door, so thought what the hell, so we decided to join them, and after a while, k d appeared and silently signed our items, I had had the fore site to print off a picture I had taken of her in Birmingham in 1999, so was very pleased to get that signed!
So all in all as days go a rather splendid one!
