“One remarkable thing about this Smile this, music, is the complex patchwork of layered sections woven together and pieced together in sound..

Is it that, from the Streets of Hawthorne, could rise up a bunch of young men who would influence the world and capture the Spirit of a time with a spiritual quest in sound that rose from these every day streets into something dark and sometimes glorious, something exciting new to rise from surfing to a concerto of notes and voices choral and abrasive sound bites like the inner workings of a thought being born and arriving at what it takes to Smile, a genuine Smile in our age and time with all this chaos and madness and the irony that a Smile was written by someone whose soul was at times torn. A Beethoven of the new age who was bestowed with gifts that he did not fully understand. The Beach Boys Smile era

“This is said from my gu,t my heart. I love Brian Wilson I love his music.

I love the window, the door he opened into the soul and it is like The Dark Night of the soul however only something that could occur in the late sixties in California between materialism and poverty, a musical experience that would be created in the soul of some young man from Hawthorne who had transcended time, country and tapped into the infinite quilt of the many levelled Universe like a leap in Quantum Physics as of sound waves stretching out from a place in time to a Forever echo.”

NOTES FROM THE SMILE JOURNAL THE BEACH BOY DAYS JOURNAL

A follow up on this, as I asked for a bit more about the thoughts of the band at the time (Lucy)

Dennis loved it but did not articulate it or talk about it that much, the same thing with Brian. They were already onto other things.

It was not at that time a deep thing for him that he showed off or talked about it and he did not get the support then no matter what anyone says in articles.

Brian and I were already starting A World Of Peace.I was already reciting poems at The Troubadour.

That is why I chose my own quote. I was already creating my own body of work and Dennis Wilson, Bruce Johnston and Brian Wilson

If You Knew‘ emerged at that period and Magic Hand early versions.I was ont my own works.

H replayed a lot of it for me but it was sections and fragments not an organized whole.

It has been made into that but what was ther Dennis loved.

I asked Stevie if they ever told him why it was canned:

To close Stevie has this to say:

“Perhaps the most important thing about Smile is not what I say but how it touches you influences you as a being. How you experience the music emotionally physically what it opens in you. Does sit open sadness hope concern fear tragedy triumph and therein lies its beauty it does it all and that is a microcosm of life.

SMILE
“Brian Wilson’s music is triumphant healing

moving powerful.Brian has been through much adversity

in his life and over come many hurdles

and obstacles and is to be commended.

He has does much good in the Universe

and has touched many people

on lonely nights.

Given comfort to so

many souls.Out of his sorrow

or through his sorrow the song rises.

Darkness comes before the dawn

sorrow before the song

In Smile he has created a Symphony

that the whole world can sing along.”

This may not make good press but it does not get much more honest. The true stories are never told the pain it caused him the  rejection can not be  made up by acceptance in the world even though that may be some vindication. You can not bring back those years the hurts that wounded him for along time and that he slowly rose up from to carve out somewhat of a life again.

This is my view.

To close Stevie has this to say:
