Of course we all know that we should value people for who they are inside and yet the reality is that we make judgements about people based on what they look like.  Not only that, but we make those decisions within the first 90 seconds of meeting them!  Take a look at this statement:

“Never judge a book by its cover because if you don’t like the cover, you will never open the book!”

I wonder what message you are giving out when you put your clothes on?  Do you think people see you as friendly or aloof, shapeless or elegant, healthy or weary . . .?

Pauline HarwoodI was born and raised in Enfield and then trained as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital.  As a nurse looking after sick children, I worked for two years in Saudi Arabia and then in a local hospital in Enfield.  Now as a House of Colour consultant, I also do voluntary work with Noah’s Ark Hospice, supporting parents and encouraging siblings of children with life limiting conditions.

I’m often asked who should come to have their colours done.  Well, the simple answer is that it’s for everyone!  Personally, I started my “journey” when I was 30 (those big “0” birthdays get to many of us don’t they)?  Others come when they have reached a crossroads of some sort in their lives.  Then there are those who are desperate to find extra hours in the day and need to find clothes that will look good quickly.  Or those where someone has made an unkind comment to them such as, “You always look tired” (thoughtless comments like this can stay with us for a long time and often sap our confidence).  Interestingly, your season stays with you throughout your whole life so it’s really helpful for children to have this information early.  I’m ashamed to say that I still recall trying to dress my third son in an orange shirt.  He stubbornly refused to wear it but as it turns out now, he is a summer like me and so he was right – orange really is not his colour!  Equally though, you are never too old to begin your journey.  Whatever stage of your life you are at, you are very welcome.

I have been lucky enough to visit many places around the world including the Middle East.  In my travels, I’ve noticed that some places are vibrant and filled with colour, whilst others are more sedate.  Yet it is precisely this that gives them their character.  Funnily enough, it’s exactly the same with people.  Not only are there different approaches for different cultures but also, because we’re all individuals, trying to copy the styles and colours that other people are wearing will never work for us.  I often hear people saying, “I can’t find anything to suit me,” or, “There’s nothing for my shape.”  Yet in my own experience, once I realized that I had my own unique skin colouring, style and personality, comments like these just melted away.  Taking a few simple steps helped me enormously but embracing the whole House of Colour approach, I can honestly say was life changing.

Becoming a House of Colour consultant has been perfect for me because seeing people transformed allows me to be the fairy godmother that I always wanted to be!  And maybe it’s due to my nursing background, but I am always acutely aware of how easily people can feel vulnerable in a situation where they’ve come for help.  Ever mindful of this, when you come to my studio I will ensure that you find a very safe environment.  I will never tell you what to do nor will I criticize you.  My aim is to show you how to bring out the best in yourself and to give you the tools to do that.  I love that my clients send me photographs of themselves and their clothes.  Sometimes they ask me whether an item of clothing is right for them and sometimes they just want to show me how they look.  If you take my class, I will be here to support you too.  So give me a call and let’s begin your journey.

Here’s one final thought.  Whether you decide to take the journey now or not, never kid yourself that your clothes don’t speak because they speak volumes!
