Stephen Kalinich is a poet and songwriter, and the only man to have co-written songs with all three of The Beach Boys’ Wilson brothers. As such he has long-standing connections with many musicians both here and on the US West Coast who help him assemble a mixture of dreamy beach songs and spoken word. The Honeys offer a strong new recording of California Feeling, while Carnie and Wendy Wilson revisit Little Bird. Strength in depth comes from the UK’s Paul Steel with Ocean and David Courtney’s Star Cries, whilst US pals like ex-Beach Boy David Marks and Brian Wilson band member Probyn Gregory weigh in with fine tracks, with actor Stacey Keach delivering Stevie’s well-known poem The Magic Hand. There is very much a family and friends feeling all over the album, and with masses of lovely harmonies throughout this will satisfy all those who love Beach Boys-styled summers.
